Beautifully Broken | Beverly Gurganus Fine Art

I was listening to Pandora like I often do as I work in my studio, and the song from Plumb “Beautifully Broken” began to play.  The words just resonated in my heart, and I found myself replaying the song over and over while soaking it all in.

(stage 1 - rough drawing on canvas)

Life is full of hardships... unexplainable, unimaginable hardships, and it isn’t my intention to discuss the why’s behind the tragic storms that we face for fear of sounding uncompassionate with my lack of understanding.  I can’t comprehend why someone would fly a plane into a building or how one can abduct a child and sell them multiple times a day for sex.  These unspeakable acts are and will always be a sensitive topic, so even though I don’t understand, I choose to trust in God whose thoughts are higher and greater than mine.

(Stage 2: blocking in color and value - "the ugly stage")

What I do know is that life is a journey and we all wear the scars of our travels, but those scars are simply a reminder of where we have been and not who we are.  I love the verse from Isaiah 64:8

“But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.”

Each one of us is a work of art…a work in progress.

(Stage 3: building layers)

When I first started painting, I struggled with the process.  You see, there is what I call the “Ugly Stage”, and when I begin a painting, I have a vision in mind.  I sketch that vision on canvas, and at that point I’m excited about the painting.  Then I begin to block in the color, and my excitement starts to fade as I question myself and loose confidence.  The drawing often becomes lost, and the canvas looks to be a complete mess.  This is when I would be tempted to scratch the painting and start over, but in time, I began to understand that it is just the process. I now silence my brain and keep painting.  Nine times out of ten, the painting comes together with each added layer of paint and becomes my next favorite.  It’s all about trusting the process.

(stage 4: continuing to build layers and begin adding details)

There are many “ugly stages” in our lives, and I’m not talking about those awkward middle school days (although it was most definitely an ugly stage for me).  I’m talking about the pruning, the chipping away, and/or the fires that is part of the process that brings us to the end…our completion.

(stage 5: building final layers, and tighten brushstrokes)

We all have scars and we all are broken.  Sometimes we are so blinded by our own scars that we feel alone because we can’t see other’s scars, but you are never alone.  Our scars don’t have to be our end if we will trust the master creator, that he will bring you to completion…a masterpiece just as he promised.

Beautifully Broken by Plumb

Every tear, every doubt
Every time you've fallen down
When you're hurting, feeling shame
When you're numbing all your pain
When you've lost your way
And feel so far away
You're not

You're beautifully broken
And you can be whole again
Even a million scars
Doesn't change whose you are
You're worthy
Beautifully broken

Every fear of being loved
For who you are no matter what
When you're stumbling, with each step
And you're haunted by regret
And the darkness closes in
Just listen

You're beautifully broken
And you can be whole again
Even a million scars
Doesn't change whose you are
You're worthy
Beautifully broken
You're beautifully broken (beautifully broken)
You're beautifully broken

Oh, the god who made the stars
Is the god that made your heart
And he's holding you right now
He can heal the broken parts
And make beauty from the scars, the scars
Beautiful scars!

You're beautifully broken
And you can be whole again
Even a million scars
Doesn't change whose you are
You're worthy
You're beautifully broken oh oh
And you can be whole again oh oh yeah
Even a million scars
Doesn't change whose you are
You're worthy
You're beautifully broken (you're beautifully broken)
Beautifully broken (you're beautifully broken)
You're beautifully broken
