Plein-Air at Oak Grove Lake Park

Today was our (my 11 yr. old daughter and I) first official plein-air Tuesday, and we chose Oak Grove Lake Park.

My daughter came to me before school was out and asked if I would do art lessons with her so I came up with what I felt would be a win-win situation for the both of us.  Plein-air painting is something that has been on my "To Do More Of" list, and what better way to get motivated than to combine the experience with teaching.  Isn't amazing how us mommas can get motivated through a little nudge from our kiddos?

Today's adventure took us to Oak Grove Lake Park in Chesapeake, VA...the perfect place to begin this summer endeavor.  Oak Grove has gorgeous trees surrounding the lake with "look out" decking, piers, and walking paths.  Any artist could find something to paint here for sure.  And...if you think this is beautiful, you should see it in the fall.  (a little side note...this is a popular location for family portraits, too.)

See what I mean about this place in the Fall?  I took these a couple of years ago, and this wasn't even at the peak of Fall.

Now, let me tell ya...packing for off site painting is the hardest, least fun part, but you gotta take the bad with the good so we packed up and headed out.  You should have seen my girl looking all cute with her back Ol' stuff...adorbs! (I forgot to get a photo with her and her bag...next time.)

I let her help pick a spot that she thought would make an interesting painting, and I'm sure the fact that it had a nice bench for her to sit had nothing to do with her choice (Haha).

I demonstrated how to break up your canvas into foreground, mid ground, and background before sketching the placement of the subject matter.  Then we painted...

She would not let me photograph her painting since this is her first try, but next time there will be photos.

The weather was cloudy and cool at 74 degrees with a few sprinkles here and there, but it didn't keep us from enjoying the morning together.  She told me after we left, that she had so much fun and can't wait to go again.  That's just music to my momma ears cause isn't that what it's all about?  Teaching your children and watching them enjoy the learning.

Now...where shall we go next week?
